One of the most useful questions to ask before buying a pre-workout: do you want stimulants or not? The answer depends on your caffeine tolerance, when you train, and what you're after.
Stimulant pre-workouts
Built around caffeine (and sometimes other stimulants), these support energy, alertness, and drive. Great for morning or midday training and for pushing through tough sessions. The downside: tolerance builds, and high-stim formulas can cause jitters, a crash, or interfere with sleep if taken late. High-stim examples in our lineup include Bucked Up Woke AF and BAMF — for experienced users only.
Non-stim (stimulant-free) pre-workouts
These skip caffeine and focus on pumps and performance — L-citrulline for blood flow, plus beta-alanine and betaine. Ideal if you train in the evening, are caffeine-sensitive, or want to control your own caffeine separately. Examples: Gaspari Proven Pump and Nutrex Niox.
How to choose
- Train at night or caffeine-sensitive? Non-stim.
- Want max energy and focus? Stim — but mind the dose and total daily caffeine.
- Want both? Use a non-stim pump product and add your own caffeine to control the amount.

Frequently asked questions
Is non-stim pre-workout as effective?
For pumps and performance, yes — non-stim formulas can be very effective. They just won't give the energy "kick" of caffeine.
Can I take stim pre-workout at night?
It's not recommended — caffeine can disrupt sleep for many hours. Choose a non-stim option for evening training.
Can I combine a non-stim pre-workout with coffee?
Many people do, to control their caffeine dose. Track your total daily caffeine and start conservative.
